In early 2004 the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday launch online versions to serve the Mails content 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Daily Mail Online

View website

The site is a modern and fresh digital interpretation of the UK's two popular newspapers. Packed with breaking news from home and around the world, sports news and fixtures plus health news and advice, complete with entertainment and celebrity gossip, horoscopes and great special offers and promotions. The site also includes the newspaper's most popular columnists.

Being involved with the project from a very early stage has meant outlining the information architecture, the gathering of functional requirements through to usability testing and the inclusion of accessibility features across the site. My main involvement and responsibility initially was the front-end build and development of CSS based XHTML templates, including the production and quality control of the XHTML and CSS used site wide, produced by myself and a number of permanent and contract staff working on the project. Also overseen was the graphic design, user experience and interaction workflow of a number of sections.

Since launch a number of seasonal and periodic channels have been incorporated into the original site. These have been produced and or directed by myself. A number of features both from a commercial and editorial standpoint have also been incorporated or improved upon over the sites first 12 months, these have included:

  • Ad Impact, alternately known as ad clutter, whereby ad spaces are collapsed if unsold.
  • The introduction of channel sponsorship site wide via an easily maintained mechanism.
  • The inclusion of a number of new adverting formats incorporating Ad Impact.
  • The outlining of design patterns available to editorial and commercial team.

Main involvement and successes include

  • Implemented the XHTML/CSS site build for the Mail Online incorporating the dailymail.co.uk and mailonsunday.co.uk
  • Develop the graphic design of seasonal and periodic channels across the two sites.
  • Author XHTML/CSS code for the above mentioned seasonal and periodic channels.
  • Advised upon best practices and design standards when using valid XHTML and CSS to achieve web standards.
  • Advised upon and implement accessibility requirements needed to meet the W3C WAI guidelines.
  • Develop Mail Online products so that they are available for use across the ANM network.

This is my online portfolio, showcasing work created in the seven years I've been a graphic and web designer.

I also use the site as a development area where ideas and techniques are explored and commented upon.
